This was my first project that I created in my first year of sixth form. The theme was 'the Memphis movement' which was a design and architecture group from the 80's. The group was founded by the designer Ettore Sottsass and was known for its bold, vibrant, and unconventional style. I had to create a product which fit into this style, so I had decided to produce a storage cupboard which could be both functional and have an attractive appeal.
This was my finished product, which is a piece of furniture consisting of a storage cupboard, a drawer as well as some shelves. I had made the cupboard and drawer handles myself with some metal rods and a turning lathe in my school's workshop.
I wanted to paint each section of the product a different colour as I thought it would stand out to audiences who approved of the Memphis movement at the time. I think the colours also compliment each other nicely to fit the aesthetic of Memphis perfectly.
For the legs of the product, I had cut out multiple of the same sized squares and had rotated them to form a unique shape. I thought this would add more character to the piece as the exterior is a simple shape on its own, so it makes the cupboard more animalistic which is also what the Memphis movement consisted of.
This design is meant to be a low coffee table in the form of a puzzle piece. I thought it would be creative to include a matching rug with the table allowing it to blend in nicely and almost create the illusion of a 3D rug. I was inspired by Japanese low coffee tables where users usually sit on the floor to eat their meals as well, hence the seat cushions in the bottom left diagram. I had also drawn sofas around the table in case users prefer to use it as a coffee table in their living room.
This was the design idea that I had chosen to develop and make for the project.
For my chosen design, I thought I would draw the product in greater detail, showing how the cupboard door would be attached and how I imagined the seat could be placed over the top.
These images are of the cardboard models I created to represent what my final product would look like once it is built, just of a smaller scale.
This model also has a functional cupboard and drawer to make it seem as realistic as possible to viewers so they are prepared for how the final product will work.
After this point, we then began the making process of the project, producing the final project.
